At last night’s board meeting, the Camden Fairview School Board worked through a busy agenda and approved several substantial recommendations presented by district administration.
The board voted 7-0 to approve Superintendent Johnny Embry’s request to provide free cafeteria breakfasts and lunches to all employees. Superintendent Embry and the board indicated that free meal services for employees is a small benefit Camden Fairview can provide to show employees the district appreciates all they do every day for Camden Fairview students. Free staff meals will begin on February 24, 2022.
Certified PPC Vice President Athenia Dodds presented the results of employee voting on the options for the 2022-2023 calendar. 186 employees voted, with Calendar A receiving 117 votes and Calendar B receiving 69 votes. Ms. Dodds and the PPC recommended that the board approve Calendar A, and the board voted 7-0 to do so. A copy is available here.
The board also approved district administration’s recommendation to use CKLA as the district’s literacy curriculum with the supplement of 95% Group. Assistant Superintendent Tara Armstrong shared that this recommendation was made after discussion with K-5 teachers, literacy facilitators, administrators, and parents. “We’re excited to move forward with a curriculum aligned with the Science of Reading,” said Superintendent Embry.
Superintendent Embry next discussed last week’s announcement by Governor Hutchinson and DESE districts may choose whether to contact trace and quarantine close contacts. Superintendent Embry shared that he consulted with district Points of Contact before recommending that the district continue to contact trace to determine close contacts but no longer require asymptomatic close contacts to quarantine. Under the new procedure, the parents/guardians of close contacts will be notified and asked to monitor their students for symptoms and keep them home if they become symptomatic. The board voted 7-0 to approve the recommendation. District Points of Contact will begin operating under the new procedures today.
Superintendent Embry also presented the proposed elementary realignment plan. During the presentation, the board heard that Camden Fairview’s current building footprint is based on the district’s 2003 K-12 enrollment of 3159 students, and today’s enrollment is about 2134 students. Superintendent Embry said, “Realignment is necessary now to increase efficiency. We can also use this opportunity to strengthen and enhance the services we provide to our students and families. We can reimagine Camden Fairview to both reflect our current enrollment and allow us to chart a strong path forward for the future.” After discussion, the board voted 6-1 to approve the elementary realignment plan. A copy of the presentation is available here.
Employees, families, and other district stakeholders are encouraged to continue submitting their questions, comments, and concerns using the form found here: https://forms.gle/b4RExFaPh8k4aN6o6. Camden Fairview is also planning opportunities for community discussion forums.
