Curriculum:

Students attend art, music, physical education, and library classes once a week. Guidance classes and gifted and talented enrichment classes are held every other week.

The two computer labs are equipped with a computer-aided  instruction  program, "Success Maker," which allows the students to work at their individual instructional level in reading and math. Students work in the computer labs 4 days a week.

The Accelerated Reading Program is available for all first grade students and for kindergarten students with a 100 sight word vocabulary.

KINDERGARTEN:

Kindergarten students at FES are introduced to several different curriculum programs, which emphasize reading, writing and math. The students are able to gain knowledge of basic math skills through the Everyday Math program, which centers on problem-solving strategies and critical thinking skills.

Kindergarten students also go to the ELLA ( Early Literacy Learning in Arkansas) lab for intensive training in reading and writing. They are taught to read and write independently as well as to self-correct, edit, and revise work. Teachers provide reading and writing instruction on each student's individual level in the classroom.

FIRST GRADE:

First grade classrooms are implementing a centers-based balanced literacy curriculum. A full-time Literacy Coach is coordinating the program for reading and writing. She assists the teachers in planning high quality classroom instruction for all children.

The Everyday Math program encourages the development of problem-solving strategies and techniques. Students develop the ability to make easy transitions among all problem representations.

Fairview Elementary also offers one-on-one reading instruction through the Reading Recovery Program. This is a short-term intervention program that teaches problem-solving techniques while integrating reading and writing skills.
